Foxes team champs at all levels, produce four individual champions at NIB-12

The Foxes cross country team has a long-standing team goal to win each race at the annual Northern Illinois Big XII conference meet — six races in total: varsity girls/boys, fr/so girls/boys and open girls/boys. 

Mission accomplished in 2017.

In the girls varsity race, Alyssa Edwards won her second meet in a row with a time of 17:43.1. Edwards was followed closely by Helena Kleronomos (2nd, 17:49.2), who was 24 seconds ahead of the third place runner from DeKalb. Earning all conference runners included Olivia Borowiak (5th, 18:55.0), Emily Eberhart (7th, 19:09.5), Mady Klebenow (8th, 19:15.1) and Victoria Crawford (12th, 19:38.9). As a team, YHS cruised to victory with 23 points, ahead of Kaneland's 80, DeKalb's 89 and Geneseo's 95.

On the boys varsity side, the Foxes got back on top of the NIB-12 after not placing first for the first time in conference history in 2016 (3rd place). The Foxes were led by Ben Summers' fourth-place finish in 15:57.9. All conference athletes included freshman Ivan Westcott (7th, 16:08.5), Patrick Black (11th, 16:09.6), Zack Price (12th, 16:22.0) and Matt Cox (13th, 16:22.8). Ben Tholen (16th, 16:34.9) missed all-conference by 6 seconds, and Eric Naumann (20th, 16:41.2) rounded out the varsity seven for Yorkville. As a team, the Foxes (47 points) beat 2A No. 5 Kaneland (64 points) and 2A No. 3 Sycamore (69 points) to claim the team title.

On the fr/so level, the girls put up a perfect score of 15 in the four-team meet. Sara Klemm was the individual champion in 18:47.8, and was followed by Hailey Simmons (19:14.1), Sam Moreno (19:51.3), Anabela Penland (20:27.4) and Nicole Vergara (20:53.3) in the top five. Natalee Penland (8th, 22:16.2) was also in the top 10 for the Foxes. On the boys side, Mark Mattson led the Foxes to a 50 point win with a runner-up finish in 17:19.4. Corey Kramer (3rd, 17:22.6), Austin Hunter (4th, 17:23.1) and Tyler Jensen (5th, 17:25.3) were all in the top 10.

In the combined open race, senior Kimberly Batdorf won the individual girls title with a time of 20:07.2. She was followed by Maggie Klemm (2nd 20:26.5), Emily Berge (3rd, 21:16.5), Ashley Malas (7th, 22:04.8) and Jinnaea Richardson (9th, 22:22.4) all in the top 10. The girls open won with 18 points. In the boys open, Alex Loos won the individual championship in 16:56.9. Foxes in the top 10 included Rio Lara (3rd, 17:33.1), Austin Popplewell (7th, 18:00.1), Jacob Hernandez (8th, 18:00.1) and Zach Rice (10th, 18:05.6). The boys open won with 29 points.

The varsity Foxes will travel to Minooka for the regional this Saturday.
