Girls Race

The YHS girls cross country team, led by individual champion and new school record holder Alyssa Edwards, won its eighth sectional title — and first in Class 3A — to qualify for the IHSA State Meet for the 10th year in a row.

Edwards won her third individual title in her last four races, setting a new school and course record with her 16:52.00 effort. The Foxes put all seven runners in the top 30 (138 total runners), with their top six in the top 13 and four in the first six in a dominating effort. Helena Kleronomos (3rd, 17:16.02) continued her impressive rookie campaign, and was followed closely by juniors Emily Eberhart (5th, 17:35.66) and Olivia Borowiak (6th, 17:40.73 — both momentum-building performances. A pair of freshmen were next for the Foxes, with Hailey Simmons (11th, 17:48.01) just ahead of Sara Klemm (13th, 17:57.63). Junior Nicole Greyer (29th, 18:29.67) got her racing legs back under her after missing the regional last week due to illness.

The Foxes has 26 points in the winning effort, followed by Minooka's 73, Edwardsville's 89, Lockport's 117 and Lincoln-Way Central's 126.

The girls extended their state-qualifying streak to 10-straight years — a streak that includes five state, eight sectional and eight regional titles.

Boys Race

The YHS boys captured its fourth sectional title in school history — and first in Class 3A — to qualify for the IHSA State Meet for the 11th year in a row.

Ben Summers led the Foxes with his ninth-place effort in 15:20.59 on the fast Granite City course. He was followed closely by Ivan Westcott (11th, 15:23.73) and Matt Cox (13th, 15:24.28). Patrick Black (27th, 15:38.66) and Zack Price (35th, 15:48.52) rounded out the scoring with a scant 27.9-second split 1-5. Ben Tholen (36th, 15:51.60) was right on Price’s heels, with Eric Naumann (41st, 15:58.38) made it 7-for-7 of Foxes under 16 minutes. As No. 7, Naumann also edged every other team’s No. 5 runner, with the exception of Lockport and Edwardsville.

Yorkville (84) won the title by 11 points over runner-up Lockport's 95. Also qualifying for the state meet were Edwardsville (111), O'Fallon (112) and Lincoln-Way Central (131).

The Foxes win continued one of the state’s most impressive state-qualifying streaks, which began in 2007 when the IHSA went to three classes in cross country. YHS qualified every year it was Class 2A (2007-2015) — winning the state title in 2013 and 2015 and third-place finishes in 2012 and 2015 — and qualified for state again in its first season in Class 3A last year, placing 24th.
